DirectionsStarting at Palladium or Jonction tram stops, head towards Pont de Sous-Terre, the bridge that traverses the River Rhône, and cross over it on the left-hand side. Just after the bridge, take the path that leads off to the left and it will take you along the river. There are trees on either side of the path which provide a lot of shade. Depending on the time of year, this side of the Rhône is popular for people wanting to bathe on the river’s shallow banks. Once you reached a graffitied underpass, walk through it then pass under the Viaduc de la Jonction. This viaduct is for rail traffic but also has a footpath. Just after the viaduct, you need to ascend some stairs and continue walking on the path alongside the river. When you reach a divide, take the path on the right. Tip - taking the path on the left will lead you to a large, shaded area next to the river where people picnic and hang out. The water here always looks brilliantly turquoise and so tantalising for a dip! If you choose to visit then all you need to do afterwards is retrace your steps back to the path divide. The path taken on the right starts to climb slightly. Go past the stairs you come to which are on your right, then at the intersection go straight on. The path gradually climbs and you will also pass a small park located on your right. From here, you will see Pont Butin ahead of you on your left as you continue along the path. Nearing the bridge, the stony path becomes a dirt path and also gets steep and winding. Good footwear is advised, and caution if walking on a wet day or after recent rain. You exit the path onto the bridge. Turn left and walk across Pont Butin. Take in the view of the river Rhône - a wonderful sight from the bridge. Just after the bridge on the left are some metal stairs leading downwards. Take these stairs then two sets of steps. At the bottom of the second set of steps, take the path on the left and walk down towards the river. Go left and pass under Pont Butin. Keep following the main path; eventually it will start to climb gently and you will emerge onto the edge of a field. Continue following the path on the right and after several metres or so you will once again head back into the foliage. Continue along the path, taking the steps and crossing a bridge as you go. Once you reach a paved road, go straight across it to a narrower trail in front of you. Ahead, you will see a information board welcoming you to the Onex Forest and showing all the possible trails throughout the forest. To continue this walk, you will take the path that runs alongside the river. Partway along, you will pass the Onex jetty (where there is also the second information board) and shortly afterwards you will come to a yellow walking signpost, then another. Follow these signposts in the direction of ‘Bernex’.

After the third information board that you pass is a short, wooden bridge. Cross the bridge and head uphill. This section of the walk is pretty steep and winding. Once reaching the top, the path opens up onto a field and you will see a yellow walking signpost indicating the direction of ‘Le Lignon/Chèvres’ - follow the path in that direction. You will be led up to Route de Loëx. Go right then take the small track immediately on your right which runs alongside the road. Further on, you pass Loëx Hospital which is on the left-hand side of the road. After passing the hospital, the path curves round to the right. Follow the path on its winding descent and it will eventually take you back to and along the river. Keep walking until you arrive at a yellow walking signpost which indicates the direction ‘Chèvres (passerelle)’. Here you will also see Le Lignon footbridge to your right - this bridge is a popular spot for photos. Do not cross the bridge but instead continue to follow the same path along the river's edge until you reach Passerelle de Chèvres (Chèvres footbridge). Another yellow walking signpost at the bridge shows the direction of ‘Aire-la-Ville/Bernex’ which is the direction you need to continue in. A little after the bridge where the path divides, take the trail on the right following the river. When you come to an SIG information pillar, you can take a detour right toward an observation hut, if you wish. After the visit, retrace your steps back to the trail and continue in the same direction. When you reach a sign indicating ‘Réserve Naturelle Nants de Borbaz et des Picolattes’, keep left and go up the wider trail. On reaching the T-junction, turn right and then a few metres after take another right down a narrow trail - you are now in the Bois de Planfonds (Planfonds Woods). When you come to an information board for the Réserve Naturelle Nants de Borbaz et des Picolattes, continue straight on. Go past the next left turn until you reach a T-junction where there is a yellow walking signpost. Turn left in the direction of ‘Bernex’. Not too far along this track is a narrow turning on the left which is marked by a post with a yellow walking sign as well as a ‘No horses/bikes allowed’ sign - take this path. Eventually you will emerge onto the edge of a field with the village of Bernex in the distance. Walk along the perimeter of the trees up to the Chemin de Mennesy. Go right along the road then take the first left, Chemin de Borbaz - a small unpaved road, and continue all the way to the end of the road. Bear left onto Chemin du Stand, following the road round to the left, then all the way till Route de Chancy. Go left and walk along this main road to arrive shortly at Bernex Pré-Marais tram stop, for your return journey home.
