The commune of Veyrier includes the village and hamlets of Petit-Veyrier, Sierne, Pinchat, and Vessy.
Bordering the French department of Haute-Savoie, it has a history dating back to 1201.
Notable for the discovery of Magdalenean artifacts in 1833, it was once under the control of the Geneva Cathedral chapter and the Villette family.
Veyrier became part of Geneva in 1816 after the signing of the Treaty of Turin.
Originally rural, it transitioned to a residential area after the 1960s with the development of villas and apartment buildings. The village briefly had town status but this was lost after changes were made to the legal definition of a town.
Veyrier is listed on the Swiss Federal Inventory of Heritage Sites as a site of national importance.
